Letter from the Editors
Vision and perception; two intertwined facets of critical thinking and being. How we see is very often informed by how we are seen. Perception is shaped by this relationship between seeing and being seen; vision contoured by our perception, place, and conditions therein.
Much of this month’s issue of The Rib (the second in our new format!) explores this tension between perception, vision, and seeing. Daisy Nam dives deep into The Patient Eye, Jonathan VanDyke’s recently-closed exhibition and performance at The Columbus Museum in Georgia. Nick Gardner reviews Tender, in which Sean Merchant considers the malleability of perception at Pearl Conrad Gallery in Mansfield, Ohio. And Stephen Anderson reviews Liza Sylvestre’s Captioned at Granary Arts in Ephraim, Utah, in which the medially deaf artist explores the relationship between understanding and being understood. This issue also looks at the politics of display with Kelsey Gray considering Portland’s Utopian Visions Art Fair while Tessa Paneth-Pollak shares her experience of this year’s ArtPrize Grand Rapids.
Today of all days--Election Day 2018--being seen, heard, and counted is critical. We remind you to make your way to the polls and vote...The Rib will be waiting for you when you return.
