Jabber-Jaw, Acts of Translation
Tropical Contemporary
Many of the pieces in Jabber-Jaw point toward everyday objects, but nearly all of them are constructed or manipulated in a way that calls attention to their material and signal being played upon by a non industrial actor. A wrist watch and a pack of birth control pills cast in a pool of hardened metal, held above a podium casting a cloudlike shadow. A video of slugs climbing up a wall loops on a monitor mounted sideways on the gallery wall, trailing cords like slime down to the power outlet. Humor and the free form mixing of images and associations run throughout the show; threads of thought are picked up and dropped without coalescing into concrete form.
